The Middle River Concert Band is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1957, when members from the Martin Aircraft band, Highlandtown band, and American Legion band combined. The first public concert by the band was in 1959 at the Essex Flag Day celebration.
By the early 1960’s, the band was conducted by Joe DiCara, who continued to lead the band for the next 40 years. Following the death of Joe DiCara, Ray Reiner became conductor. Our current conductors are Pam McCracken, Sue Wilson, and Mike Powis.
We are an all-volunteer group dedicated to taking music to those who might otherwise not have the opportunity to hear it. Our members come from a variety of backgrounds and professions. Currently our members include lawyers, chemists, mechanics, engineers, tech experts, pharmacists, and teachers – to name a few.
We rehearse or perform every Monday evening. Most of our concerts are private performances at area hospitals, nursing homes, senior centers, and senior residences, however we do a few public concerts each year.
The band is always open to additional players. If you are interested in learning more, click here.
Hi,
I believe that my grandfather Jean (pronounced John) played the tuba in this band back in the 1970’s. Do you have any pictures of the members back then?
Hi Katherine,
I apologize for taking so long to respond to you. Unfortunately, I do not have any photos from earlier times except the ones you see in our gallery. If you should come across any, I would love to include them.
